Fluco indoor track and field off to a good start

The Fluvanna County High School indoor track and field squad participated in its first meet of the season on December 11 at Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA). Their originally scheduled meet at Liberty was postponed due to bad weather. Coach Melanie Kennedy noted that the weather also limited her team’s ability to prepare for field events.

Despite these challenges, the Flucos delivered strong performances in several field events. Indoor meets like this are a bustling scene, with hundreds of athletes filling every available space in the facility. Kennedy brought 50 athletes to the meet—an even split of 25 girls and 25 boys. Twelve schools competed in the FUMA Mini-Invite, including many from the Jefferson District. There was no official school scoring at the event.

Unsurprisingly, the top performer for the Flucos was junior Garrett Jordan, a state champion runner and key running back on this year’s successful Fluco football team. Jordan won the 55-meter dash with an impressive time of 6.57 seconds, finishing about a second ahead of the second-place competitor. He also claimed first place in the 300-meter dash, clocking in at 36.57 seconds—once again winning by approximately a second.

The only other winner for the Flucos was senior Ruby Frazier, a long-time track and cross-country standout who has been a top runner since ninth grade. Frazier dominated the 1000-meter race, winning by an impressive 25.5 seconds with a finishing time of 3:10.36.

Fluco’s boys also featured a top competitor in the 1000-meter event. Senior Jack Jeffries finished second in a large field with a time of 2:52.20.

Another notable performance came from sophomore Charlotte Gifford. She placed third in the 55-meter hurdles—a track event—and tied for second in the pole vault, a field event. Among the girls, freshman Isabella Campbell secured third place in the 500-meter race.

On the boys’ side, several athletes posted strong finishes in field events. Senior Matt Dillon earned third place in the high jump, junior Ethan McPherson placed third in the pole vault, and sophomore Jayden Wrigley took third in the shot put. Additionally, the Fluco boys’ 4×200 relay team—comprised of Matt Dillon, JoRon Dillon, Zion Cheribin, and Garrett Jordan—finished in fourth place.

Senior Alex Schmidt also made a solid showing with a third-place finish in the 3200-meter run.

The indoor track and field team competed again at FUMA on December 17. Following that meet, the Flucos will have a break until January. Notably, the school does not have an indoor track facility, so there are no home meets planned for the season.
