Special Agent MacGruber has found himself on the wrong side of the law in a recent Saturday Night Live episode packed with satire and jokes about the trove of Jeffrey Epstein emails released this week—20,000 pages to be specific.
During Glen Powell‘s hosting debut, alum Will Forte reprised his classic recurring character, MacGruber. This time, MacGruber and the team (played by Powell and Chloe Fineman, both sporting mullets) race against the clock to defuse a bomb. However, the action-adventure spoof character becomes increasingly harried when he is confronted with the unearthing of the Epstein files.
“No one is above the law, and I mean no one,” MacGruber proclaims before scanning the list—only to find his own name featured prominently. Acting quickly, he attempts to shred the document despite protests from Powell and Fineman, arguing that destroying the list will actually make it easier for those seeking to erase its contents.
Later in the episode, a redux of the scene has the trio once again working to stop an explosion. Powell pulls out another copy of the list, citing MacGruber’s advice to always duplicate evidence. Ever eager to cover his tracks, MacGruber demands Powell hand over the “left radical list” and launches into a rant threatening him if he refuses.
Hastily redacting his name, MacGruber then tries to replace it with the names of his fellow agents, as it becomes increasingly clear that he is deeply implicated. In a dramatic move, he straps the list onto the bomb itself and, when it fails to explode, bangs it against the walls—declaring the impact will bring about a “new beginning.”
In the third and final MacGruber sketch, the theme song bluntly states, “It’s pretty clear by now MacGruber’s on the Epstein list.” Set at an abandoned monastery with just 30 seconds left before a bomb detonates, MacGruber attempts to confess and clear his conscience. However, Powell and Fineman are already well aware of his predicament.
MacGruber admits, “I’m all over it, like, every third page,” confirming the full extent of his presence on the list.
This hilarious SNL segment cleverly combines MacGruber’s chaotic heroics with sharp commentary on the controversy surrounding the Epstein email release, delivering plenty of laughs along the way.
