The New York Mets came into the season with high expectations, but they fell short and missed the postseason completely. As the offseason begins, it’s clear the Mets need to make some big upgrades. But before the Mets can improve their roster, they need to re-sign or replace their own free agents, headlined by the duo of Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz. Diaz is projected to sign an $88 million deal, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, which should fit the Mets perfectly this winter. FanSided’s Chris Landers recently predicted the Mets would re-sign Diaz in free agency this offseason. “Paying full freight for a reliever doesn’t feel like a very David Stearns thing to do, but paying for Diaz does feel like a very Steve Cohen thing to do (especially given the way 2025 ended),” Landers wrote. “New York’s bullpen was a constant source of anxiety even with Diaz in the fold last season; if he goes elsewhere, I’m not sure how they’ll piece together a World Series-caliber unit for 2026. Plus, the Mets are the only team that won’t need to cough up draft picks to sign Diaz, which could give them the inside track as other front offices hesitate to pay a closer into his mid-30s.” The Mets need to do everything in their power to bring Diaz back. It’s practically impossible to find another closer like him on the market. New York could try to replace him, but spending the money to re-sign him would make much more sense. Diaz is a fan favorite in Queens, and the Mets front office should pay him the money he deserves.
