No injuries were reported after an MBTA commuter rail train collided with a stalled car on a railroad crossing in Acton Thursday evening.
The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the crossing near 117 Central Street on the Fitchburg Line. Transit officials say the car was stopped on the tracks when the train struck it, pushing the vehicle about 300 feet and leaving it mangled.
The driver had exited the car just before the collision and was uninjured. Acton Police confirmed that no one on the train or at the scene suffered injuries.
According to Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan, investigators believe the driver “drove around the gate and then exited prior to the train collision.” Keolis, the contractor that operates the commuter rail, added that “the crossing gates and warning system were functioning as intended, and the car drove around the closed gates.”
The unidentified driver will be issued a citation, Sullivan said.
At the time of impact, Fitchburg Line Train 1427—originating from North Station at 4:25 p.m.—was carrying 44 passengers. All riders, along with the driver, were evaluated by emergency responders on site. Acton Fire Department crews also contained a minor fuel spill from the damaged car.
Commuters on the Fitchburg Line experienced delays. At 5:40 p.m., MBTA officials posted on X:
“Fitchburg Line Train 1427 (4:25 p.m. from North Station) has been terminated today at South Acton due to a road vehicle on the right of way. Passengers may consider Fitchburg Line Train 431 (5:30 p.m. from North Station).”
Transit Police continue to investigate the incident.
