Uber to launch driverless taxis next year in San Francisco

**Uber Announces Launch of Autonomous Taxi Services in the San Francisco Bay Area**

*Oct. 29 (UPI)* — Uber announced on Wednesday that autonomous taxi services are on the way to the San Francisco Bay Area. Company officials revealed that the ride-sharing giant will launch its driverless service “later next year” through a collaboration with electric vehicle (EV) producer Lucid Motors and self-driving technology firm Nuro.

Uber’s Chief Product Officer, Sachin Kansal, emphasized the significance of the Bay Area as a hub for innovation, stating, “The Bay Area has long been the birthplace of transformative technology, and it’s only fitting that Uber’s next-generation robotaxi program with Lucid and Nuro will begin here—launching to the public next year.”

Lucid and Nuro plan to have around 100 robo-taxis operational in the coming months. Meanwhile, Uber aims to deploy approximately 20,000 autonomous vehicles over the next six years. Kansal added, “By combining deep expertise in electric vehicles, autonomy, and ridehailing, we’re laying the groundwork for safe and scalable autonomous rides in the Bay Area and beyond.”

In addition to autonomous vehicle developments, Uber announced a new safety feature over the summer designed to allow women passengers and drivers to avoid being paired with men on the ride-sharing app.

While the company confirmed next year as the launch window for its robotaxi service, a specific date has yet to be revealed.
