Sea of Thieves director Gregg Mayles leaves Rare after almost 37 years

A career spanning almost four decades came to an end at Rare this week, as longtime employee and Sea of Thieves director Gregg Mayles announced his departure from the company.

Mayles has been working at Rare for about 36 years and 10 months, during which time he contributed to some of the studio’s most beloved franchises. His impressive tenure includes work on iconic titles such as Donkey Kong Country, Viva Piñata, Battletoads, Banjo Kazooie, and many others.

He shared the news of his departure on his social media channels this week, expressing his gratitude to fans and his team. In a heartfelt post, Mayles thanked players for supporting his games and acknowledged his colleagues for their ongoing support throughout the years.

In true creative fashion, Mayles included a lengthy and heartfelt rhyme dedicated to his many years at Rare. The poem reflects his deep connection to the company and the incredible journey he’s experienced during his career.
