Four years ago, Amazon Games launched the MMORPG *New World*. Since its debut, the game has experienced a rollercoaster of developments, including a significant refresh when it expanded to consoles as *New World: Aeternum*.
Following the conclusion of Season 10, and amid reports of mass layoffs at Amazon, the team behind *New World* has announced that content updates for the game will come to an end. However, the servers will remain active and accessible to players through 2026.
In a blog post published this week on the game’s official website, the developers provided details about the future of *New World*. They confirmed that although new content updates will no longer be released, the game itself is not shutting down. Players will still be able to log in and enjoy the existing content for the foreseeable future.
Additionally, the team assured players that if the servers are ever forced to shut down, they will provide at least six months’ notice ahead of time. Players will continue to have the ability to purchase in-game currency, download, and install *New World*, though there will be no refunds on items such as Masks of Fortune.
We previously reviewed *New World* in its original form back in 2021, as well as the console edition *New World: Aeternum* in late 2024. Editor Donovan Erskine noted in both reviews that the game showed a lot of promise and was developed by an experienced team, even if it didn’t quite reach the exceptional heights he hoped for.
This announcement coincides with Amazon’s recent news of a major layoff, affecting roughly 14,000 employees. While the *New World* development team did not explicitly mention the layoffs, it is confirmed that Amazon Games has been impacted by the workforce reductions.
Despite these changes, *New World* players can continue to enjoy the game for now, with support expected through 2026.
