‘Grey’s Anatomy’ 450: Two Alums Return & Pregnancy Is Revealed In Milestone Episode

**Grey’s Anatomy Episode 2202 (450th Overall) Recap: A Milestone Marked by Emotional Storylines and Farewells**

*Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about Episode 2202 of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.*

In its milestone 450th episode, Grey’s Anatomy paid tribute to its rich history, opening with a beloved recurring metaphor—the carousel—from Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) childhood. The iconic line, “The carousel never stops turning, you can’t get off,” was delivered by Kate Burton reprising her role as Ellis Grey, Meredith’s late mother. Ellis appeared to Meredith in an unsettling dream, one of two Grey women who checked in on her during the episode.

Meredith’s sister Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), returning from Chicago, teamed up with her to support Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) through her intense struggle with grief and guilt. The turmoil stemmed from an explosion at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital caused by the mother of one of Amelia’s patients. The blast tragically claimed several lives, including Amelia’s close friend, Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales), and left the father of Amelia’s child, Link (Chris Carmack), fighting for his life. The patient at the center of the case now faces a dire prognosis.

Though Amelia showed some signs of improvement—getting out of bed and opening up to Meredith and Maggie—she ultimately decided to take a sabbatical from Grey Sloan to “go wherever my people are.” This storyline marks a significant, lengthy break for Caterina Scorsone’s character. Fans are left wondering how long Amelia will be absent and when she will return.

Meanwhile, Maggie revealed big personal news: she is pregnant with her first child, conceived via donor sperm. She had not yet shared this life-changing update with Winston, whose romantic life has been complicated since their split. After last season’s close encounters with Jules (Adelaide Kane) and their intimate moment in the Season 22 premiere, Winston (Anthony Hill) found himself paired with Jules once again under somewhat unexpected circumstances.

Both Winston and Jules vowed to put the past behind them while treating a patient together. However, Jules has been visibly struggling with the emotional aftermath of Monica’s death—struggling to open her locker, lashing out at new interns, and freezing up in the OR while assisting Winston. Despite repeatedly insisting she is fine, it’s clear she is not. To help her and the other second-year interns process their grief, Jules led a candle-lighting ceremony at the episode’s end.

Tensions ran high between interns Lucas (Niko Terho) and Simone (Alexis Floyd). After Simone confessed in the season premiere that she had slept with someone, Lucas responded with hostility, invoking the famous “we were on a break” defense from *Friends*. Their conflict culminated in Bailey (Chandra Wilson) kicking Lucas out of the OR during a critical procedure to remove a forklift prong protruding from a construction worker’s abdomen.

Stepping in for Lucas was none other than Wes (Trevor Jackson), the intern who had slept with Simone. True to his confident—and sometimes arrogant—style, Wes had earlier defied orders by treating patients without permission. Despite the rough start, Wes managed to save the patient, impressing Bailey enough to earn an invitation to the OR over Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.).

Link (Chris Carmack) spent much of the episode grappling with the possibility of a long road to recovery following his severe injury. His frustration boiled over, leading him to snap at Jo (Camilla Luddington). Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) stepped in to provide support, allowing Link to vent his anger and get some much-needed relief.

In other developments, Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Owen remain distant, with Owen moving into the old trailer Derek once lived in. Teddy, missing the OR, asked Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) to resume his Chief of Surgery duties so she could focus on practicing medicine rather than administration, to which Richard happily agreed.

Ben Warren (Jason George) is adjusting well to his reinstatement in the residency program. Taking charge during the forklift accident rescue, Ben even went against Bailey on treatment decisions. Teddy sided with him, the patient survived, and Bailey rewarded Ben’s leadership by appointing him Chief Resident.

This landmark episode was written by Grey’s veteran Zoanne Clack and directed by Kevin McKidd. The production featured an on-set celebration acknowledging the show’s impressive 450-episode milestone, blending emotional storytelling with a heartfelt nod to Grey’s Anatomy’s enduring legacy.
