Domestic airlines in India carried 1.29 crore passengers in August, marking a slight decline from the previous month. However, this figure shows an improvement compared to July, when domestic air traffic stood at 1.26 crore passengers.
According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a significant number of travelers faced disruptions last month. Over 74,381 passengers were affected by flight delays, while cancellations impacted 36,362 passengers during August.
**Market Dynamics**
August saw some shifts in airline market shares. IndiGo’s domestic market share dipped to 64.2% from 65.2% in July. Conversely, the Air India Group—which includes Air India and Air India Express—gained ground, increasing its share from 26.2% in July to 27.3% in August.
Other players saw minor changes: Akasa Air’s market share slightly decreased from 5.5% to 5.4%, while SpiceJet maintained a stable share of around 2%.
**Performance Review**
Government-owned Alliance Air experienced a drop in market share, declining from 0.4% in July to 0.3% in August. Star Air and Fly91 maintained steady market shares of 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively.
The DGCA also reported a total of 1,407 passenger-related complaints against scheduled domestic airlines in August, translating to an average of approximately 1.09 complaints per every 10,000 passengers carried.
These figures highlight ongoing challenges in domestic air travel, with airlines needing to address delays, cancellations, and customer service concerns to improve passenger experience going forward.
