Arunachal Pradesh is set to mark a significant milestone with the inauguration of its first commercial coal mine at the Namchik-Namphuk coal block in Changlang district tomorrow. The opening ceremony will be led by Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, who will perform the traditional Bhoomi Poojan and officially hand over the mining lease.

In addition to the formalities, Minister Reddy will flag off the machinery for Coal Projects Private Limited (CPPL) to commence operations at the site. As part of a green initiative, he will also plant 100 trees, underscoring the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

**A Long-Awaited Development: The Journey of Namchik-Namphuk Coal Block**

The Namchik-Namphuk coal block holds an estimated reserve of 1.5 crore tons of coal. Initially allocated in 2003, the project faced multiple operational challenges leading to long delays and halts. However, in 2022, the block was revitalized through a transparent auction process that welcomed private sector participation, paving the way for the state’s entry into commercial coal mining.

This launch marks the beginning of Arunachal Pradesh’s coal mining industry, a strategic development as India continues to hold its position as the world’s second-largest coal producer.

**Economic Benefits: Revenue and Employment Boost**

The commencement of commercial coal mining is projected to generate an annual revenue exceeding ₹100 crore for Arunachal Pradesh. Beyond financial gains, it promises to create numerous employment opportunities for the local youth, fostering economic growth within the region.

This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of EAST — Empower, Act, Strengthen, Transform — which drives developmental activities in India’s Northeast.

**Resource Management: Combating Illegal Mining and Ensuring Transparency**

The official launch of commercial mining operations is expected to suppress illegal coal mining activities and curb resource wastage. It will bring enhanced transparency and accountability to the management of the state’s natural resources.

Furthermore, the government has announced plans to auction two critical mineral blocks in Arunachal Pradesh, along with five similar blocks in neighboring Assam. This move highlights the growing importance of the region in India’s technological and strategic mineral landscape.

With this landmark project, Arunachal Pradesh steps confidently into the coal mining sector, promising sustainable growth and harnessing its mineral wealth responsibly for the benefit of its people and the nation.
