**Mumbai: BMC-Run Nair Hospital Blood Bank Centre Achieves NABH Accreditation**
The Blood Bank Centre at BMC-run B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital and Topiwala National Medical College in Mumbai Central has received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). This achievement marks Nair as the first government hospital in Maharashtra to earn NABH recognition for its blood bank services.
**First Government Hospital in Maharashtra to Achieve NABH Accreditation**
According to an official from the BMC Health Department, the hospital’s NABH accreditation ensures enhanced patient safety and builds greater trust among patients and donors. This accomplishment is notable not only in the state but also at the national level. Out of nearly 5,200 blood banks across India, only 148 have NABH accreditation. Moreover, just 12 of these accredited blood banks belong to government institutions, primarily linked to prestigious centers like AIIMS and PGI Medical College and Hospital.

Within Mumbai, B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital’s Blood Bank is the first government-run facility to receive this esteemed accreditation. A senior official from Nair Hospital shared, “This will directly benefit both patients and blood donors. NABH accreditation means that the quality and safety of blood are tested at the highest standards. The risk of infection or error will be minimized, and patients will receive safe, reliable blood. At the same time, the process of blood donation will also become more secure and transparent.”
