Veteran actor and director Anupam Kher recently spoke candidly about the box office clash between his directorial venture *Tanvi The Great* and the musical romantic drama *Saiyaara*. In an exclusive conversation with Anant Goenka of Expresso, Kher revealed the emotional and financial challenges he faced during the film’s release.
“I worked for four years on this film. We released it on the same day as *Saiyaara*, and it got completely wiped out. It depressed me. It made me feel very sad, not just for myself, but also for the new actor whom I took from my acting school,” Kher shared.
**Financial Struggles Ahead of Release**
Kher also opened up about the financial hurdles encountered before *Tanvi The Great* hit theaters. “The financer of the film ran away a month before its release. It’s a costly film, so I called my friends—doctors, lawyers, and others. They gave me the money to proceed,” he revealed.
Despite these setbacks, *Tanvi The Great* received international attention, having been screened at the Cannes Film Festival and in New York. Hollywood veteran Robert De Niro reportedly watched the film until the interval and praised it as “good.”
**About the Films**
*Tanvi The Great*, directed by Anupam Kher, features a star-studded cast including Arvind Swami, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Iain Glen, and Pallavi Joshi. The film narrates the inspiring journey of an autistic woman determined to hoist the Indian flag atop Siachen to fulfill her late father’s dream.
On the other hand, *Saiyaara* is a musical romantic drama directed by Mohit Suri. It tells the love story of Vaani Batra (played by Aneet Padda), an aspiring journalist and poet, and Krish Kapoor (Ahaan Panday), a struggling musician.
**Box Office Performance**
When it comes to box office success, *Saiyaara* emerged as a massive hit, becoming the biggest romantic film in Indian cinema history. It earned a staggering ₹570.25 crore worldwide, ranking as one of the highest-grossing films of 2025, according to Sacnilk.
In stark contrast, *Tanvi The Great* managed to collect only ₹2.54 crore globally, despite its acclaimed cast and Kher’s directorial efforts.
**Looking Ahead**
Amid the contrasting fortunes, *Tanvi The Great* is set for a re-release this Friday, giving audiences another chance to experience Kher’s heartfelt story.
