Jaishankar meets EU foreign ministers in New York, discusses Ukraine and Gaza

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his experience meeting with EU Foreign Ministers at their informal gathering in New York. He expressed his gratitude to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (HRVP) Kaja Kallas for hosting the event. Jaishankar highlighted the opportunity for an open exchange of views on crucial topics such as multilateralism, the India-EU partnership, the Ukraine conflict, Gaza, energy, and trade.

His perspectives on India’s stance received widespread appreciation. Hervé Delphin, the EU Ambassador to India, underscored the significance of the discussions on issues of common interest. Delphin noted, “Special informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers convened by HRVP Kaja Kallas in New York on the margins of UNGA 2025, with the participation of three key partners of the EU — India, Brazil, and Mexico — to discuss issues of common interest. EAM Jaishankar’s views on India’s perspectives were much appreciated.”

Following the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Kaja Kallas also took to X to emphasize the EU’s commitment to multilateralism, free trade, and a world grounded in the UN Charter. She wrote, “We’ve just wrapped up the Foreign Affairs Council, joined by Ministers from Brazil, Mexico, and India. The message to our partners was simple: the EU is a reliable actor. We support multilateralism, free trade, and a world grounded in the UN Charter.”

In a press statement after the meeting, Kallas underlined the importance of partnerships with India, Brazil, and Mexico in protecting the rules-based international order. She revealed that the EU recently unveiled a blueprint aimed at deepening ties with India and Mexico, including updates to the free trade agreement with these countries.

Addressing the situation in West Asia, Kallas described the crisis in Gaza as a “devastating failure of humanity.” She urged the Israeli government to lift humanitarian restrictions immediately and stressed that expanding settlements and annexing territory are incompatible with peace efforts.

Regarding Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, Kallas condemned Moscow’s “absolute contempt for diplomacy” and noted reckless violations of EU airspace. She warned that “prospects of peace recede with every Russian air strike,” highlighting the EU’s response with a new sanctions package unveiled recently.

The discussions also reaffirmed the importance of defending the multilateral order, with the UN Charter at its core. Kallas emphasized, “Together with our colleagues today, we were also discussing that the multilateral order is really something that we all need to defend and the UN Charter is at its core. The EU’s relations with Brazil, India, and Mexico are important economically but also for protecting the rules-based international order. Just last week, the European Union unveiled its new blueprint to deepen ties with India and Mexico. We are updating our free trade agreement.”
