1 recovered and 1 missing after fishing vessel overturns off Cape Cod

BOSTON — A commercial fishing vessel overturned off Cape Cod on Thursday, prompting a search and rescue operation. One person was recovered from the water, while another remains missing, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.

Coast Guard spokesperson Keira Shantry stated that the individual who was rescued was “transported to higher medical care.” The incident occurred just before noon when Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received notification that the vessel Yankee Rose had overturned approximately three nautical miles (3.5 miles) northeast of Race Point in Provincetown.

Coast Guard crews, along with local agencies, arrived on the scene within minutes. One person aboard the vessel was transported for medical treatment, while the search for the second individual is ongoing.

The Yankee Rose, which was docked at a pier, had previously been involved in a police response on February 26. At that time, Provincetown Police Department reported that officers and firefighters responded to a call about an unresponsive person on board the vessel.

Responders discovered two individuals passed out, apparently due to carbon monoxide exposure. According to Boston radio station WBUR, both people, along with six others—including five emergency responders and a harbormaster—were sent to a hospital for evaluation.

All eight individuals were discharged by the following day. The Coast Guard and local authorities continue their efforts to locate the missing person from Thursday’s incident.
