Football state championships roundup: Glenville, Columbus Watterson win titles

Glenville put on a dominant display on defense en route to a 45-7 win over Shelby in the Division IV state championship game at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton on Dec. 5. The Tarblooders (12-3) held Shelby to just 11 yards of total offense on 24 plays.

Quarterback Brayden DeVito, one of three finalists for the Mr. Football award, struggled throughout the game. He completed just 3 of 18 passes for 38 yards and threw an interception. DeVito was also sacked four times. Glenville’s Jaquan Gibon opened the scoring with a remarkable 92-yard punt return for a touchdown.

On the ground, Chris Newell rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns, while Romell Phillips led the team with 133 yards on 14 carries. Tarblooders quarterback Arvell Nelson completed 6 of 17 passes for 90 yards and connected with Joseph Saffold on a 31-yard touchdown pass.

Shelby’s season ended at 14-1.

Columbus Watterson capped an impressive run through the Division III playoffs with a 30-0 shutout of Toledo Central Catholic during the state championship game in Canton. The Eagles finished the season undefeated at 14-0, posting three shutouts in the playoffs and outscoring their five opponents by a combined score of 218-15.

Jake McCoy scored two rushing touchdowns for Watterson, while quarterback Drew Bellisari threw for 250 yards and a touchdown. Bellisari went 13 of 22 passing and threw two interceptions, but Watterson’s defense was able to negate those mistakes.

Toledo Central Catholic (11-5) was held to just 179 yards of total offense, lost a fumble, threw three interceptions, and was sacked twice.
