Jammu and Kashmir floods: CM Abdullah conducts aerial survey of flood-hit areas

After heavy rain caused havoc across Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas on Thursday.

The Chief Minister focused his survey on the villages in the Kathua district that were severely impacted by the floods. During his visit, he interacted with residents of Duggain village in Billawar whose houses were damaged in the natural calamity, officials said.

Following the aerial assessment, Omar Abdullah chaired a meeting with district administration officers and officials from the Chief Minister’s office. He directed them to ensure that all necessary relief measures are provided promptly to the affected population.

The Chief Minister also assured residents of all possible assistance and emphasized fast-tracking flood damage assessments as well as expediting restoration works. He is scheduled to visit the Mahore area of the Reasi district to further assess the damage caused by recent flash floods, according to reports from news agency PTI.

Heavy rains across various districts triggered flash floods in rivers and drainage systems, causing landslides and disrupting traffic throughout Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah highlighted the scale of the devastation, noting that the floods damaged significant public infrastructure, including 330 bridges and approximately 1,500 kilometers of roads. Private properties, such as homes and agricultural fields, were also destroyed in many areas.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Indian Army’s 26 Rashtriya Rifles unit organized a five-day free medical camp as part of Operation Sadbhavana in the Bhalesa area of Doda district. This medical outreach provided essential healthcare services to flood-affected residents, treating over 100 patients with the help of doctors and medical staff on-site. Free medicines were also distributed to those in need.

The efforts of the administration and the Indian Army aim to support the residents of Jammu and Kashmir as they recover from the severe impact of the recent floods and landslides. (With inputs from PTI)
