Dallas P. J. Washington Jr. and Cooper Flagg each scored 21 points and teamed up on a crucial basket late in overtime to help the Dallas Mavericks secure a 138-133 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.
With Dallas leading 130-129 and 1:39 remaining, Flagg grabbed the rebound of a missed 3-pointer by Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe and delivered an outlet pass to Washington, who finished with a powerful jam during a 6-0 Mavericks run. Daniel Gafford contributed 20 points, including seven in overtime, and was one of seven Dallas players to score in double figures.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Dallas, improving their record to 4-10. Sharpe scored a season-high 36 points for the Trail Blazers, who fell to 6-7 after losing four of their last five games. Deni Avdija added 29 points before fouling out with 1:39 left, the same play that led to Gafford hitting two free throws to put the Mavericks ahead for good at 130-129.
Portland’s Jerami Grant scored 26 points in his first start of the season, filling in for Jrue Holiday, who sat out due to right calf soreness. The Mavericks were perfect in overtime, hitting all seven of their field-goal attempts, all of which were 2-pointers.
Despite Portland matching a season high with 22 offensive rebounds—including seven by Donovan Clingan, who had 11 total rebounds—the Mavericks held a 32-10 advantage in second-chance points.
Dallas was without Anthony Davis, who missed his ninth consecutive game with a left calf strain. The team announced before the game that the 32-year-old, 10-time All-Star will be out for at least another seven to 10 days. Davis has been sidelined by multiple injuries since the controversial February 2nd trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. He has missed 31 of a possible 47 games with the Mavericks.
Interestingly, Davis wore a Green Bay Packers jersey featuring quarterback Jordan Love as his bench attire. Love’s Packers recently defeated the Dallas Cowboys 48-32 in the 2023-24 NFL wild-card playoffs.
