Texas has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the popular online video game platform of enabling pedophiles to groom children and expose them to sexually explicit content. The lawsuit describes Roblox as “a digital playground for predators,” alleging that the company has failed to protect its young users.
The suit, filed Friday by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, accuses Roblox of engaging in deceptive trade practices by misleading parents into believing the platform is safe for kids. Additionally, Roblox is charged with creating a “common nuisance” by becoming “a habitual destination for child predators” who target and groom children.
“We cannot allow platforms like Roblox to continue operating as digital playgrounds for predators,” Paxton said in a statement. “Roblox must do more to protect kids from sick and twisted freaks hiding behind a screen. Any corporation that enables child abuse will face the full and unrelenting force of the law.”
This legal action follows similar lawsuits in Louisiana and Kentucky, along with several private suits accused Roblox, headquartered in San Mateo, California, of not effectively combating online predators preying on children.
The lawsuit portrays Roblox as a “sprawling and unregulated digital playground that is overrun by predators and saturated with sexual content.” It also highlights concerns over Roblox’s in-game currency, “Robux,” claiming it “provides leverage for predators to hunt and abuse children.” The filing states, “Rather than being lured by candy, modern-day predators have lured children with Robux.”
Supporting its claims, the lawsuit references “dozens of FBI investigations, criminal convictions, and private lawsuits,” including one Texas case where a child who started using Roblox at age 10 was “raped after being groomed through Roblox.”
Paxton’s office has requested a jury trial and is seeking various penalties, including a $10,000 fine for every violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. The suit also calls for an injunction to prevent further wrongdoing.
Roblox boasts an impressive 151.5 million average daily active users as of October, according to a regulatory filing. Of that number, 83% reside outside the US and Canada, and as of 2024, 40% of daily users are under the age of 13.
In response to the lawsuit, a Roblox spokesperson told The Post that the company shares Paxton’s “commitment to keeping kids and teens safe online.” The spokesperson emphasized that Roblox has implemented “industry-leading protocols” to protect users and remove bad actors.
“We are disappointed that, rather than working collaboratively with Roblox on this industry-wide challenge and seeking real solutions, the AG has chosen to file a lawsuit based on misrepresentations and sensationalized claims,” the spokesperson added.
According to Roblox, the company has introduced “over 145 safety measures” in the past year alone and plans to roll out age estimation technology soon. This new feature is designed to “help prevent adults from chatting with minors.”
