Former F1 driver Mick Schumacher recently tested an IndyCar at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) Road Course in October, sparking speculation of a potential move to the American open-wheel racing series. The German driver shared an update on his IndyCar prospects while also discussing his contract situation for the 2026 season.
Schumacher signed with Alpine’s World Endurance Championship (WEC) program for the 2024 season and has been competing in hypercar races since then. With the 2025 WEC season approaching its conclusion, he took the opportunity to test an IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) at IMS. The test was positive, and notably, Mick’s mother and a close family friend traveled to the US to support him during the session.
Following the test, the Schumacher family enjoyed dinner with RLL team principal Jay Frye, who assured them that the team would take good care of Mick should he decide to pursue an IndyCar career in 2026. The 26-year-old driver is currently under a two-year contract with Alpine, which ends after the 2025 WEC season.
As he awaits news from Alpine about a possible contract extension for 2026, Schumacher commented on his future plans and the IndyCar test. “I still need to figure out what I want to do in 2026. I can choose except Formula 1. I have some very good options on the table,” he said. Reflecting on the test, he added, “The car felt like a faster Formula 2 car with better tyres. The environment was right, the people at RLL are very competent and approachable. I was impressed by the Americans’ passion for motorsport.”
Schumacher also expressed his enthusiasm for continuing in single-seaters: “I’ve always really enjoyed single-seaters, so an IndyCar season is a very strong option. On the other hand, I’ve settled in very well at Alpine; the two years have been enjoyable. It would be good to have clarity and a contract by the end of the year,” he concluded.
### ‘F1 Is Still Close to My Heart’: Mick Schumacher on Returning to the Pinnacle of Motorsport
Mick Schumacher is the son of seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher. He won the FIA Formula 2 Championship before being promoted to the Haas F1 Team in 2021. However, after just a couple of seasons, he was released from Haas amid significant media pressure due to his famous surname and the team’s backmarker status.
When asked about a possible return to Formula 1, Mick revealed, “Of course, Formula 1 is still on my mind. And if an offer came along, I probably wouldn’t say no. Formula 1 is still close to my heart.”
In 2023, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team principal Toto Wolff brought Schumacher on as a reserve driver after Haas parted ways with him. Additionally, Mick was considered by Audi during their driver lineup selection for the 2026 F1 season.
As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on Schumacher’s next move — whether it’s a return to F1, a new challenge in IndyCar, or continuing his journey in endurance racing.
