Amid heavy rains in Latur, water discharge from Manjara Dam rises to 18k cusec

Water discharge is currently underway from the dam due to ongoing rainfall in the catchment area. On Sunday, 8,735 cusecs of water were released through four gates. This volume increased to 18,431 cusecs by 3 pm on Monday, an official informed, according to PTI.

Latur has so far received 142 percent of its average monthly rainfall for September. The official pointed out that the average rainfall in the district for this month is 132.7 mm, whereas 188.8 mm has already been recorded. Additionally, the seasonal average rainfall since June 1 is 13 percent above normal, the news agency reported.

Meanwhile, heavy rains caused flooding in Sakhat village, located in Paranda taluka of Dharashiv district, Maharashtra. Several people were stranded in floodwaters, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to instruct authorities to evacuate those affected.

A statement from Ajit Pawar’s office on Monday noted that the downpour cut off the area and left at least 12 individuals trapped. In a telephonic conversation with Dharashiv District Collector Kirti Kiran Pujar, the Deputy Chief Minister directed the immediate rescue and relocation of stranded people to safer locations.

Ajit Pawar also ordered the deployment of a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team to the site and arranged for helicopter support if required.

Taking stock of the overall rain situation in the state, Ajit Pawar said the government is closely monitoring conditions in several districts affected by heavy downpours. He urged district administrations, disaster management agencies, and local bodies to remain vigilant and ensure timely evacuation of residents in vulnerable areas.

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that NDRF and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams should remain on standby to carry out relief and rescue operations as needed.

“The state government stands firmly with citizens during this crisis. Farmers and affected families will receive all necessary assistance,” Ajit Pawar assured, as per the PTI.
