“It has been minimized to how much money do you have to spend”: Nick Saban issues blunt take on LSU job opportunity after Brian Kelly’s dismissal

The LSU Tigers fired head coach Brian Kelly on Sunday, a day after their 49-25 loss to No. 3 Texas A&M at Tiger Stadium. The defeat marked LSU’s third loss of the season. Following Kelly’s dismissal, the team announced that Frank Wilson, the Tigers’ associate head coach and running backs coach, will serve as the interim head coach.

On Wednesday, former LSU coach Nick Saban shared his thoughts on the Tigers’ vacant coaching position. Speaking to On3, Saban commented, “That’s changed dramatically, the whole question of what constitutes the best job. What used to make a job great was facilities, fan support, good academic support, recruiting base and being able to create value for the players. Now that has been minimized to how much money do you have to spend on building a roster. That is the most important thing by far.”

Saban, who won seven national titles during his coaching career—six at Alabama and one at LSU—provided perspective on the evolving landscape of college football coaching.

During his nearly four seasons at LSU, Brian Kelly posted a 34-14 record and led the team to the Southeastern Conference West Division title in the 2022 season. According to reports, LSU will owe Kelly $54 million as part of his buyout.

### Ed Orgeron Open to Returning as LSU Head Coach

On Wednesday, former LSU coach Ed Orgeron expressed openness to returning to lead the Tigers following Kelly’s firing. Speaking on ESPN’s *Unsportsmanlike*, Orgeron said, “I’d love to. Are you kidding me? I just gotta get in my truck, I’ll be there today!”

Orgeron’s history with LSU is well established. He was hired in January 2015 as the team’s defensive line coach, named interim head coach in September 2016, and two months later promoted to full-time head coach. He held the position until the end of the 2021 season, compiling an impressive 51-20 record.

Most notably, Orgeron guided LSU to an undefeated 15-0 season in 2019, culminating in a national championship. Following that historic run, the Tigers hired Brian Kelly to replace him.

As LSU searches for its next leader, the program faces a critical decision about the future direction of the team.
