Hideo Kojima has delivered some of gaming’s most memorable experiences over the past few decades. However, a new account reveals that he nearly brought his unique vision to one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
According to former Konami Vice President of Licensing Christopher Bergstresser, in an interview with Time Extension, the Wachowskis themselves approached Kojima and Konami with a pitch for a video game based on *The Matrix*.
“The Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima,” Bergstresser shared. “So Kazumi Kitaue, Kojima, Aki Saito (who still works with Kojima), and I were at the Konami HQ, and we got a call from the Wachowskis, who wanted to come in and meet with Kojima. So they did!”
Despite this exciting opportunity, the idea was ultimately rejected. Bergstresser explains that Kazumi Kitaue, a Konami producer at the time, simply said “no” when the Wachowskis inquired about Konami developing a *Matrix* game.
This decision was likely influenced by Konami’s desire to have Kojima focus on *Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty* instead.
Interestingly, according to another Konami employee, Kojima himself continued to express interest in creating a *Matrix* game even after this pitch was declined.
This glimpse into the past highlights what could have been a fascinating collaboration between Kojima and the Wachowskis—bringing together two visionary creators from gaming and film alike.
