The New York Jets earned their first win of the season after a thrilling 39-38 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8. This much-needed win marked a significant moment for the team, and quarterback Justin Fields used the occasion to address recent comments from Jets owner Woody Johnson.
In the week leading up to Sunday’s game, Johnson, 78, had been critical of Fields’ performance this season. The longtime Jets owner remarked that it would be difficult for any team in the league to secure wins with a quarterback playing the way Fields has so far.
During postgame interviews, the 26-year-old quarterback dismissed Johnson’s remarks as “outside noise” that neither he nor his teammates pay attention to, according to Zack Rosenblatt of *The Athletic*. Fields emphasized that it was the belief from his teammates and coaching staff that helped him overcome the challenges this season.
“That’s outside noise at the end of the day,” Fields said regarding Johnson’s comments. “I get that he’s the owner of the team, but that’s outside noise. The biggest thing was my teammates believing in me and my coaches believing in me.”
On the field, Fields delivered arguably his best performance of the 2025-26 campaign. He finished the game with 244 passing yards and a touchdown, while importantly not throwing any interceptions against the Bengals.
Additionally, the Jets’ offensive line showed marked improvement in Week 8. For the first time this season, the group did not allow a single sack, a stark contrast to their struggles in previous games. This offensive line performance played a key role in giving Fields the time he needed to lead the Jets to their first victory of the season.
