An Alabama death row inmate was executed using a controversial method after delivering chilling final words, RadarOnline.com can reveal.
Todd Boyd, 54, was put to death on Thursday, October 23, at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility. The cause of death was nitrogen gas, marking a rare use of this method. Boyd was convicted for a grisly 1993 murder — a crime he steadfastly denied involvement in.
### ‘I Didn’t Kill Anybody’
Boyd was sentenced to death over three decades ago for his role in the murder of Gregory Huguley in Talladega County. The victim was bound with tape, reportedly by Boyd, and burned alive by another man who doused him with gasoline before setting him on fire. The attack was allegedly in retaliation for a $200 unpaid cocaine debt.
Despite the conviction, Boyd maintained his innocence until the very end.
Before his execution, Boyd waived his right to a final meal and issued a powerful statement:
*”I just want to say again, I didn’t kill anybody, I didn’t participate in killing anybody. Just want everyone to know, there is no justice in this state,”* he said, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.
He added, *”It’s all political, it’s all revenge-motivated. There is no justice in the state, there can be no justice in the state.”*
### Todd Boyd’s Final Words
Boyd reflected on the death row process, saying it *“is not about closure because closure comes from within, not from an execution.”*
His final words before the execution commenced were:
*”I want all my people to keep fighting, you all matter,”* followed by, *”Let’s get it.”*
At the time, Boyd was strapped to a gurney, his body covered tightly in a white sheet from the chest down. During his final moments, he made the shape of an “L” with his thumb and index finger towards his brother, who returned the gesture from the viewing chamber.
The execution began at 5:55 p.m. local time, when a mask was placed over Boyd’s face and nitrogen gas started flowing two minutes later. He was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m.
### Alabama Attorney General Responds
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall issued a statement condemning Boyd’s claims of innocence.
*”For more than 30 years, Boyd sought to delay justice through endless litigation, yet he never once presented evidence that the jury was wrong,”* Marshall said.
He continued:
*”In 2014, he challenged Alabama’s lethal injection protocol, and in 2018, he opted for nitrogen hypoxia – each time strategically avoiding accountability for his crime. Gregory Huguley was never afforded the chance to delay his own brutal and untimely death.”*
### Controversy Surrounding Nitrogen Gas Executions
Alabama started using nitrogen gas for executions in January 2024. Boyd was the seventh inmate executed by the state in 2025.
The U.S. Supreme Court denied Boyd’s request for a stay of execution. However, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, known for her left-leaning views, strongly criticized the execution method in her dissent. She described nitrogen gas executions as *“psychological terror”* and *“excruciating suffocation.”*

The use of nitrogen hypoxia remains controversial as states explore alternatives to lethal injection, but its implications continue to fuel debate surrounding the ethics and humanity of capital punishment.
