OpenAI is preparing to introduce collaborations featuring fictional characters on its Sora platform. Bill Peebles, the head of the Sora team at OpenAI, has confirmed that cameos—appearances of well-known fictional characters in videos—are “on the roadmap.”

This announcement aligns with CEO Sam Altman’s recent shift in stance regarding the company’s previously controversial opt-out copyright policy for video generation. Under the new approach, creators will have a sanctioned mechanism to incorporate copyrighted characters, moving away from unauthorized or automated use.

### Policy Change: More Control for Rightsholders

Altman has promised rightsholders “more granular control” over their intellectual property on Sora. The upcoming system will resemble an opt-in model for using one’s likeness but with additional layers of control designed to better protect copyrighted content.

This policy overhaul comes in response to a wave of unauthorized and problematic content circulating on the platform, including videos depicting meth-cooking scenarios and Nazi-themed SpongeBob characters.

### Monetization Strategy: Revenue Sharing for Rightsholders

Alongside these policy changes, Altman also revealed plans to implement a revenue-sharing model for rightsholders whose characters are featured on Sora. He noted this initiative will “start very soon,” though the exact payment framework might require some experimentation to fine-tune.

This move reflects OpenAI’s broader effort to address copyright concerns and build a more sustainable content creation ecosystem on Sora, as it competes with major players like Meta and TikTok in the AI-powered social video arena.
