**Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): CM Mohan Yadav Directs Probe into Melioidosis Cases and Promotes Swadeshi Movement**
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Thursday directed the principal secretaries of health and agriculture to investigate melioidosis cases in vulnerable areas and raise awareness among paddy farmers about preventive measures. He also instructed officials to ensure proper treatment arrangements for anyone found infected.
The CM took cognizance of a report from AIIMS Bhopal highlighting that paddy farmers are at higher risk of contracting melioidosis, a potentially fatal disease with symptoms similar to tuberculosis (TB). The report stated that the spread of infection is rising due to the expansion of paddy cultivation and waterlogged fields across Madhya Pradesh. So far, cases of melioidosis have been confirmed in more than 20 districts.
Melioidosis is caused by the bacterium *Burkholderia pseudomallei*, which is found in contaminated paddy field soil. Its symptoms often resemble TB, including prolonged or recurrent fever, persistent cough, chest pain, and poor response to routine treatment. Farmers are the most vulnerable group owing to frequent contact with soil and water in the fields.
