Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed deep grief over the recent stampede at a rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The tragic incident, which occurred during a rally addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, resulted in 40 deaths and left many others injured.

Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor described the tragedy as “heartbreaking” and highlighted systemic flaws in India’s crowd management practices.

> “It’s a very tragic and painful situation. Something is wrong in our country with crowd management. Every year, there seems to be an incident,” he said. Recalling similar past incidents such as the Bengaluru stampede, Tharoor stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive national policy on crowd safety.

He added, “There should be certain rules, standards, and protocols in place.”

Tharoor further urged both central and state governments to come together and implement “very strict procedures” for crowd control. He warned that without clear national standards, disasters like the Karur stampede will continue to claim innocent lives.

### Government Response and Compensation

Following the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation measures for the victims’ families. Each family of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), while those injured will be granted ₹50,000 each.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced additional ex-gratia payments, promising ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh to the injured.

In a show of solidarity, Vijay himself pledged ₹20 lakh in compensation for each family of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for those injured.

The Karur stampede has once again brought into sharp focus the critical need for effective crowd management strategies and safety protocols across India to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
