The Ravens are likely already at a disadvantage heading into Saturday’s must-win game against the Packers at Lambeau Field. It appears the team could be without Lamar Jackson under center, as he was listed as doubtful on the team’s injury report on Thursday.
Jackson has been dealing with a back injury that forced him out early against the Patriots in Week 16. This issue has been looming over him since before Week 1, and the two-time MVP has not practiced all week. With the Ravens’ postseason hopes on the line, his availability remains uncertain.
Baltimore has made the playoffs in six of the last seven seasons, including the last three consecutively. Currently sitting at 7-8, the Ravens’ postseason chances will be over if they lose or tie in Green Bay on Sunday.
If Jackson cannot start, the Ravens will turn to backup quarterback Tyler Huntley. Huntley has appeared in just four games this season and made one start, where he led the Ravens to a victory over the NFC North-leading Bears. This season, the sixth-year quarterback has completed 36 passes for 319 yards and one touchdown.
Over his career, Huntley has thrown for 3,105 yards with a 65.7 percent completion rate, along with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. When asked about the pressure of the upcoming game, Huntley told reporters, “A lot of our games have been must-win [games], and every week we must win, so we have to focus on going 1-0 this week. If we’re doing everything that we need to do, we’ll get that.” (ESPN)
The Ravens are rallying behind Huntley as their season hangs in the balance. Star running back Derrick Henry expressed confidence in the backup quarterback, saying, “He goes out like he’s the starter. He practices that way, and he prepares that way. So yes, if ‘Snoop’ [Huntley] is going to go out there, he’s going to roll and do what he has to do.”
With Jackson as the starting quarterback over the past eight seasons, the Ravens have compiled a 79-35 record, including postseason games, and have averaged 27.7 points per game. Without Jackson, the team’s scoring average drops to 16.2 points per game.
Meanwhile, the Packers have already clinched a playoff berth following the Lions’ loss to the Vikings on Thursday, adding further urgency to the Ravens’ must-win scenario.
