President Donald Trump faced a fact-check after claiming that prices for Thanksgiving dinner were substantially lower this year. The president posted on Truth Social Thursday morning, asserting that this year’s holiday meal cost was 25 percent lower than last year’s, which he attributed to policies under then-President Joe Biden.
Trump’s statement came as Biden’s approval rating hit new lows, largely driven by concerns over his handling of the economy—an issue that remains the most important to 47 percent of Americans.
“2025 Thanksgiving dinner under Trump is 25% lower than 2024 Thanksgiving dinner under Biden, according to Walmart,” Trump wrote. “My costs are lower than the Democrats on everything, especially oil and gas! So the Democrats’ ‘affordability’ issue is DEAD! STOP LYING!!!”
An official White House account, Rapid Response 47, shared a screenshot from an earlier Truth Social post where Trump made similar claims.
“Walmart just announced that prices for Thanksgiving Dinner is now down 25% since under Sleepy/Crooked Joe Biden, in 2024,” Trump posted Wednesday evening. “AFFORDABILITY is a Republican Stronghold. Hopefully, Republicans will use this irrefutable fact!”
However, the Rapid Response 47 post was quickly challenged with a community note that provided important context. Fact-checkers pointed out significant differences between the 2024 and 2025 Walmart Thanksgiving meals.
The note explained that the 2025 Walmart Thanksgiving meal contains 15 items, while the 2024 meal included 21 items. Moreover, many brand-name products featured in the 2024 meal were replaced with Walmart’s Great Value brand items in 2025.
The community note also linked to Walmart’s corporate website, revealing that the 2024 sample Thanksgiving meal for eight people cost approximately $7 per person, with 21 menu items listed (though the store claimed 29 items were used). In contrast, the 2025 sample meal for 10 people came out to under $4.00 per person, featuring just 15 items on the menu.
These differences suggest that the claimed 25 percent price reduction does not present the full picture, as the composition and quantity of the meals varied significantly.
