**Royal Spanish Football Federation Criticizes Barcelona Over Lamine Yamal’s Injury Treatment**
Nov. 11 (UPI) — Officials from the Royal Spanish Football Federation have expressed criticism towards Barcelona due to a lack of information regarding the treatment of Lamine Yamal’s groin injury.
Yamal, 18, has been a key player for Barcelona, starting the club’s last six matches, including their recent 4-2 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday in Vigo, Spain. During this stretch, he has impressively scored four goals and provided three assists.
On Tuesday, Barcelona announced that Yamal underwent a “specific treatment required to ensure full recovery” from his injury. However, the federation revealed concerns over the handling of the case.
“The [federation’s] medical services wish to express their surprise and concern after learning at 1:47 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, the day of the official start of the national team’s training camp, that Yamal had undergone an invasive radio frequency procedure to treat his pubic discomfort that same morning,” the federation stated in an official release.
They added, “This procedure was performed without prior notification to the national team’s medical staff, who only learned of the details through a report received at 10:40 p.m. on Monday, which indicated a medical recommendation for rest for 7-10 days.”
In response to the situation, and prioritizing the player’s health, safety, and well-being, the federation decided to release Yamal from the current Spain squad.
Yamal last represented Spain during their 6-0 World Cup qualifier win over Turkey on Sept. 7. He returned to Barcelona carrying the injury and subsequently missed four games in September, as well as additional time in October. He made his comeback to Barcelona’s lineup on Oct. 18, beginning his run of six consecutive appearances.
Spain, currently ranked No. 1 in the FIFA men’s world rankings, will face No. 70 Georgia in a World Cup qualifier this Saturday in Tbilisi, Georgia. They will then host No. 26 Turkey on Nov. 18 in Sevilla.
Forward Jorge de Frutos of Rayo Vallecano has been called up to replace Yamal in the national team squad.
Meanwhile, Barcelona, currently on an international break, is scheduled to host Athletic Club in a La Liga match on Nov. 22 at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium.
