# UPS Plane Crash at Louisville Halts Package Sorting, but Contingency Plans in Place
A UPS cargo plane crashed Tuesday evening while departing for Honolulu from UPS Worldport, the company’s largest shipping hub, located at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. As a result, package sorting at the facility was halted late Tuesday and continued into Wednesday.
According to a UPS fact sheet, Worldport can sort about 416,000 packages per hour. The temporary closure has raised concerns about potential delays for customers, especially with the peak holiday season approaching.
**Checking Your UPS Shipments**
UPS customers can monitor their packages online or wait to be contacted by the company for updates on delivery status.
**Dealing with Delays**
Tom Goldsby, a professor of supply chain management at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, said UPS will likely increase flights to its regional hubs to compensate for Worldport’s closure. “The hubs are going to take on a greater burden until that critical operation in Louisville gets back to full capacity,” he explained.
UPS stated it has contingency plans in place to ensure shipments arrive at their destinations as quickly as circumstances allow, but did not provide specific details. Goldsby emphasized that with the peak holiday season approaching, UPS will be under pressure to resolve delays swiftly. “It’s an issue that they quickly want to resolve, but they are going to have to do their due diligence in resolving the current crisis,” he said.
Goldsby, who was expecting a UPS package himself, received a message that his delivery would be rescheduled due to the disruption. He added, “I understand the circumstance and will gladly receive it when it arrives,” and suggested patience will be needed from others waiting for packages.
“People and businesses don’t have a lot of understanding about the supply chain. We just don’t expect our logistics operations to have a calamity or even a bad day,” Goldsby said.
**Ongoing UPS Restructuring**
The crash comes as UPS undertakes a company-wide turnaround strategy, emphasizing business-to-business deliveries over Amazon deliveries. In its most recent earnings report last week, UPS revealed it has cut 48,000 jobs so far this year and closed multiple buildings as part of this effort. The company’s third-quarter results beat Wall Street expectations.
