Schiebel said several of his players had some dings and fatigue after competing in a showcase over the weekend. He was pleased with how the Cardinals played in their opener. “It was good to see the girls come together,” he said. “It’s early in the season, we have plenty to work on, but we have the players to make it happen. Girls basketball Valley Christian 56, Aptos 29: Freshman point guard Evie Francis scored 14 points for the Mariners in their loss to open play in the fifth annual Mission 831 Tournament in Watsonville on Monday. Junior Eliya Chavez made three 3-pointers and finished with nine points for Aptos (0-1), playing its first game under first-year Mariners coach Ray Alvarez. The Warriors led 27-15 at the half. Sophomore guard Jahniya Payne scored 12 points to lead the Warriors (1-0). Men’s basketball UC Santa Cruz 87, Willamette 61: Joseph Espy recorded his second straight double-double, and the Banana Slugs earned consecutive wins for the first time this season at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont on Monday. Espy finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Caden Breznikar had 15 points and 17 rebounds. Reserves Thomas Conley and Leo Wagner each scored 11 points for UCSC. UCSC outrebounded the Bearcats 56-43 and outscored its opponent 52-34 in the second half. Reserve Tyler Stringfellow scored nine points to lead the Bearcats (2-4).
