Junior Eliya Chavez made three 3-pointers and finished with nine points for Aptos (0-1), playing its first game under first-year Mariners coach Ray Alvarez. The Warriors led 27-15 at the half. Sophomore guard Jahniya Payne scored 12 points to lead the Warriors (1-0). Men’s basketball UC Santa Cruz 87, Willamette 61: Joseph Espy recorded his second straight double-double, and the Banana Slugs earned consecutive wins for the first time this season at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont on Monday. Espy finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Caden Breznikar had 15 points and 17 rebounds. Reserves Thomas Conley and Leo Wagner each scored 11 points for UCSC.
