San Jose: Five additional suspects arrested on suspicion of involvement in jewelry store smash-and-grab

SAN JOSE — Five additional suspects have been arrested in connection with a high-profile smash-and-grab robbery at an East San Jose jewelry store, authorities announced this week. The incident gained international attention after the store’s elderly owner suffered a heart attack and stroke due to the trauma of the crime.

According to a news release from the San Jose Police Department, the five recently arrested suspects join eight other people who were apprehended in October for allegedly robbing Kim Hung Jewelry on Aborn Road on September 5.

The suspects—Dennis Campos-Torres, 22, of Richmond; Fati Johnson, 32, of Oakland; Keimaree Dews, 18, of San Francisco; Jonathan Caruso, 25, of San Francisco; and Giovann Caliz, 32, of Livermore—were taken into custody between October 28 and November 6. All were booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of robbery.

Police previously reported that more than a dozen individuals participated in the robbery, which was captured on surveillance video. The suspects allegedly used a vehicle to ram the store’s front entrance before ransacking the business and fleeing with thousands of dollars worth of jewelry. During the attack, one suspect allegedly held a gun to the head of an adult male victim, and the elderly store owner, identified only by his family name, Bui, was violently shoved to the ground.

Moments after the first group of robbers fled, a second group entered the store but quickly exited upon discovering the display cases were empty.

Following the incident, Mr. Bui suffered a stroke and subsequently a heart attack while recovering at the hospital. Doctors attributed both medical emergencies to the stress of the robbery. He is now recuperating at home.

This robbery is part of a recent wave of smash-and-grab thefts across the Bay Area. In late September, 20 people stormed a San Ramon jewelry store, and investigators have linked an East Oakland gang to dozens of similar crimes in the region.

Of the five new suspects, Caliz was already in custody for a separate incident and extradited to San Jose on October 28. Caruso was arrested in San Francisco on November 5 with assistance from the San Jose Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). On November 6, Campos-Torres was arrested in Oakland with the help of the SJPD Covert Response Unit. That same day, Johnson was arrested in Oakland and Dews in San Francisco, both with support from the San Jose Bureau of ATF.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Hernandez (#4392) or Detective Leonard (#4913) at 4392@sanjoseca.gov, 4913@sanjoseca.gov, or call 408-277-4166.
