Research security measures to come online in 2026

Initiatives to bolster research security in the EU, advanced by the European Commission on October 28, will soon filter down to researchers setting up projects. These measures aim to enhance the ability of researchers to assess and manage risks associated with international collaborations.

One key initiative is the development of a due diligence platform designed to support researchers in evaluating potential risks in their international partnerships. Additionally, the Commission plans to establish a centre of expertise on research security, which is expected to be operational by mid-2026. This centre will serve as a resource hub within the Commission to further strengthen research security efforts.

According to Claire Gray, senior policy officer at the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the research community has been seeking support on due diligence for some time. She explained, “It is challenging to know where to find information relating to risks in international collaborations.”

Gray also highlighted that, while there are various commercial tools available for conducting due diligence, these often come at a cost and do not comprehensively cover the area. She pointed out, for example, the China Defence Universities Tracker as a resource, but implied that more extensive and accessible tools are needed to effectively support researchers.

These upcoming platforms and centres are expected to address these gaps, providing researchers with better guidance and resources to navigate the complexities of international research cooperation securely.
