BILLINGS, MT Turnovers and cold shooting hindered the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon, as they fell 55-45 to Simon Fraser University in a neutral-site contest at Alterowitz Gymnasium. UJ will open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Tuesday at Northern State University. Game time set for 5: 30 p. m. Jamestown (2-2) committed 28 turnovers and shot just 29. 8 percent (17-of-57) from the floor on Saturday. In contrast, Simon Fraser (3-4) shot an even 40 percent from the field and converted Jamestown’s miscues into 22 points. Allie Berns was the offensive catalyst for UJ, leading the team with 15 points on 7-of-16 shooting. She was the lone Jimmie to reach double figures scoring. Forward Jessika Lofstrom anchored the paint, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds-split evenly with five on the offensive end and five on the defensive end-while adding four points and tying for the team lead with three assists. Haidyn Crockett chipped in eight points and three assists but battled foul trouble throughout the afternoon. Simon Fraser was paced by a game-high 18 points from Bree Neufeld, who was deadly from long range, connecting on 4-of-5 three-point attempts. Rachel Loukes added 11 points and three steals for the victors, while Rilyn Quirke contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. After a tight first quarter ended with SFU leading 11-8, the Jimmies managed just seven points in the second period, entering halftime trailing 25-15. UJ found some offensive rhythm in the third quarter, scoring 17 points, but Simon Fraser answered with 19 of their own to extend the lead to 44-32 heading into the final stanza. The Jimmies’ defense tightened in the final frame, holding SFU to 11 points while scoring 13, but the halftime deficit proved too large to overcome. Despite the loss, Jamestown controlled the glass, holding a significant 42-34 rebounding advantage, including 18 offensive boards.
