New York Bleeds Out

**The Nightmare Descent of New York City Under Mamdani Rule Has Begun**
*By William Levin | November 13, 2025 | American Thinker*

The nightmare descent of New York City under Mamdani’s rule has begun. Defunding the police, “free” services, and rising antisemitism are just the tip of the spear. Daily, staffing decisions, policies, and mandates will be issued from the mayor’s office, implemented by an administration of hardcore socialists.

The outlook becomes even bleaker when measured in dollars and cents. Spending will soar from already unsustainable levels, even as the city’s tax base continues to exit. When the top 1% leave, along with major financial firms, they never return. The glory of New York will fade. The city will struggle to sustainably pay its bills for even the most basic services.

As we used to say in grade school—show your work.

It’s often claimed that New York contributes far more to the federal government than it receives in federal aid. The implication is that New York is impervious to federal cut-offs and holds the financial moral high ground. Hogwash.

In reality, New York City pays nothing to the federal government. The so-called contribution—estimated at $60 billion, excluding Social Security payments—is simply the individual income tax dollars paid directly by NYC residents to the U.S. Treasury. None of these payments have anything to do with the city budget. The federal government will receive these revenues regardless of where people reside. What truly matters is the NYC budget and where its revenues come from.

In 2025, New York City’s budget totaled $119.8 billion. The city starts the Mamdani-era madness with a forecasted annual deficit of $5 billion to $6 billion and no clear answers on how to fill this gap.

Factor in the city’s dependence on $10.5 billion in direct payments from the federal government. President Trump has said he will lower that number to the legal minimum, while Mamdani insists that no cuts can be made and that these payments are inviolate.

### The Financial Reality

NYC is in financial trouble—even if no one leaves. Some worry the so-called Deep State is choosing to accelerate the city’s fiscal decline for reasons unknown. One possible explanation is that federal taxpayers will be forced to cover the city’s losses.

– *MtnClimber*: NYC is in financial trouble even if no one leaves.
– *MtnClimber*: Deep State is replacing makers with takers. And neither NYC nor NYS can print money. Deep State is choosing to flush faster for some unfathomable reason. The only explanation I can think of is that Deep State is going to have federal taxpayers cover the city’s losses.
– *mewzilla*: Swing away, Mr. President, swing away! 🇺🇸 🏴
