DHS reports that a single male shot at U.S. Border Patrol agents. He was attempting to kill the agents and remains at large. In addition to this violent attack, agitators have thrown paint cans and bricks at Border Patrol vehicles. Due to the escalating violence, Border Patrol had to call the Chicago Police for assistance.
These incidents are not isolated. Threats, assaults, and acts of obstruction targeting federal law enforcement officers are increasing. These officers are simply trying to do their jobs—enforcing laws and securing the border. Their mission aligns with what every sovereign nation does: deport individuals who enter the country illegally.
Every time radicals attack ICE or Border Patrol, Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson respond by downplaying the incidents or denying their severity. Instead of condemning the violence, they encourage resistance, sending a dangerous message to the public.
While some may want to blame individuals like Maria in related clips, greater responsibility lies with Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson. Their rhetoric appears to embolden those who attack federal officers.
Furthermore, an Obama-appointed judge recently took control of Border Patrol operations in Chicago. U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against Border Chief Bovino. During a hearing, Judge Ellis stated that claims of violence by government witnesses at protests in Chicago were not credible, citing video evidence she said contradicted immigration officials’ accounts. She has gone so far as to dictate the tactics Border Patrol can use to protect themselves from violent protesters.
However, the videos referenced have been criticized as being selectively edited or truncated, potentially misrepresenting the reality on the ground.
This situation reflects a deeper concern. As Dennis Prager remarked:
> “I have never written that there is a threat of fascism in America. I always considered the idea overwrought. But now I believe there really is such a threat and it will come draped not in an American flag, but in the name of tolerance and health.”
The urgency of standing firm is echoed in these words by Charles M. Schulz:
> “It’s better to live one day as a lion than a dozen years as a sheep.”
Understanding the ideological backdrop is also crucial. President Ronald Reagan once explained:
> “How do you tell a Communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.”
Philosopher Hannah Arendt, in her book *The Origins of Totalitarianism*, warned:
> “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist.”
The ongoing attacks on federal officers and political responses to them highlight a critical challenge facing law enforcement and the nation. It remains to be seen how these tensions will evolve, but vigilance and commitment to the rule of law are more important than ever.
