LETU soccer men reach SCAC semis

**Mwambukiri’s Golden Goal in 100th Minute Lifts No. 6 LeTourneau Over No. 3 Concordia Texas in SCAC Quarterfinal**

ROUND ROCK — Bridge Mwambukiri’s golden goal in the 100th minute propelled the No. 6 seeded LeTourneau men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over No. 3 seeded Concordia Texas in a SCAC Tournament quarterfinal on Thursday night at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.

With the win, LeTourneau (7-6-5) advances to the SCAC Tournament semifinals, where they will face No. 2 seed Texas Lutheran on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

In a tightly contested match that mirrored LeTourneau’s previous deep runs in conference tournaments, the YellowJackets once again found a way to advance. This time, however, the game was decided in overtime rather than a shootout, thanks to a decisive connection between a pair of freshmen.

In the final minute of the first overtime period, LeTourneau regained control of the ball in the attacking area. Leandro Ferreira settled the ball and delivered a precise pass into the box, where Mwambukiri took a quick touch and fired a shot past Concordia goalkeeper Leonel Cuellar to score the game-winning goal.

The goal was briefly reviewed to confirm Mwambukiri was not offside before being upheld. This marked Mwambukiri’s third goal of the season and Ferreira’s sixth assist.

The victory was made possible by a stellar defensive effort from LeTourneau. Goalkeeper Edson Camara Martinez recorded seven saves, earning his second shutout of the year. Notably, in the 38th minute, Camara Martinez made back-to-back saves: first denying a shot from Jesse Garfias, then immediately stopping a follow-up attempt by Bryan Rios.

Camara Martinez continued his strong performance with two crucial saves early in the second half and another key save in the 75th minute.

LeTourneau’s Caleb Nelson nearly broke the deadlock multiple times throughout the match. The junior narrowly missed with two shots just wide in the first half and forced Cuellar into a save off a free kick in the 88th minute. Nelson accounted for four of LeTourneau’s 13 shots on goal.

Concordia held a slight edge in shots, outshooting LeTourneau 16-13. Cuellar made two saves for Concordia (9-4-5).

LeTourneau now prepares to take on No. 2 seed Texas Lutheran in the SCAC semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Round Rock.
