Letter: Pay workers fairly

George Will’s column calling for immigration reform (“Biden and Trump, in their own ways, poisoned the immigration debate,” Nov. 9) is mostly for letting employers cut workers’ salaries. The idea that immigrants are needed for work citizens will not do is code for employers setting salaries so low that only the desperate (immigrants fleeing oppressive regimes) will sign up for. All work has, or should have, dignity, and with fair compensation for difficulty, risk, and relative desirability, citizen workers can be found. One example is the H1B visa. Companies wanted cheaper computer professionals, and Congress let in overseas workers, paid far less than domestic ones, and who sent much of their salaries overseas. Salaries to U. S. workers would have benefited our economy instead. Will blames Social Security and Medicare for $2 trillion deficits, ignoring the huge defense budget. If we paid our workers fairly, their FICA contributions would fund Social Security and Medicare, especially if those earning above $176,000 finally pay into Social Security.
