KKK flyers found at IUP campus and western Pa. neighborhood

Flyers advertising the Ku Klux Klan were found at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and throughout a neighborhood in western Pennsylvania last weekend. Tom Segar, IUP’s vice president of student affairs, said campus police on Nov. 15 received reports that KKK flyers were found on sidewalks near the university’s post office. The flyers, which were not approved by the university, were discarded. Campus police searched for additional flyers, but did not find any, Segar said. IUP students and employees can report any concerns online through the school’s Office of Social Equity. Segar also linked to more information about resources available through the university. According to TribLive, about 50 flyers were recovered by Indiana Borough Police in the area of South Sixth and Grant streets. ”The Indiana Borough Police Department will not tolerate any incident of hate and will actively investigate and prosecute associated criminal offenses,” the department said in a statement. “Indiana Borough is recognized as a welcoming community and as its police department we remain committed to ensuring the peace, safety, and comfort of our friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens.” Other instances of KKK flyers were reported in western Pennsylvania the same day. A woman in Brackenridge, a community about 40 miles west of IUP, told TribLive she found KKK flyers in the street near her home. The flyers were found across three blocks, the story said. Anyone in Tarentum or Brackenridge who has video surveillance of the person or people who distributed the flyers is asked to contact police at 412-473-3056. Some of the flyers found claim they are from the Trinity White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The Southern Poverty Law Center said the Trinity White Knights are a “small and struggling faction” of the KKK in Kentucky. The group’s leader, William Bader, was cited for littering in February after he was found throwing flyers out of his vehicle in Cincinnati. In Cumberland County, “Women of the KKK” business cards were distributed at Mechanicsburg’s annual Halloween parade, held on Oct. 14.
