Garrett Crochet finishes second in AL Cy Young Award voting

Garrett Crochet had a stellar first season with the Boston Red Sox, quickly establishing himself as the team’s long-awaited ace and one of the top pitchers in baseball. Despite his impressive performance, the 26-year-old lefty was unable to unseat Tarik Skubal as the American League’s top pitcher.

On Wednesday, Crochet finished second in the voting for the AL Cy Young Award, with Skubal capturing the honor for the second consecutive year. Skubal’s back-to-back wins mark the first time since Pedro Martinez took home the award in both 1999 and 2000 that a pitcher has won consecutive AL Cy Youngs.

Skubal received 26 out of a possible 30 first-place votes, while Crochet earned the remaining four. In terms of total points, Skubal led Crochet by a wide margin, 198 to 132. Houston’s Hunter Brown finished third overall with 80 points, and Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman placed seventh with four votes.

During the 2025 season, Crochet was a dominant force on the mound for Boston. He posted an impressive 18-5 record alongside a 2.59 ERA. In addition, he led the American League in both innings pitched (205.1) and strikeouts (255). Crochet also became just the third pitcher in Red Sox history to record at least 250 strikeouts while walking 50 or fewer batters in a single season, joining the elite company of Pedro Martinez and Chris Sale.

In Boston’s sole playoff victory over the New York Yankees in the Wild Card Round, Crochet delivered an exceptional performance. He limited the Yankees to just one earned run and four hits over 7.2 innings, issuing zero walks and striking out 11 batters.

Meanwhile, Tarik Skubal continued his dominance with the Detroit Tigers throughout the summer. He posted a 13-6 record while leading the AL in both ERA (2.21) and WHIP (0.891).

With performances like these, both Crochet and Skubal have cemented their status as two of the premier pitchers in the league, setting the stage for an exciting rivalry in the years to come.
