First video game champion and legendary programmer Rebecca Heineman has passed away aged 62

Sad news this evening as Rebecca (Becky) Ann Heineman has passed away after a battle with cancer. She was known for many contributions to the video games industry, most recently as CEO of Olde Sküül. Becky won the National Atari 2600 Space Invaders Championship 45 years ago. She was a co-founder of Interplay, the creator of Dragon Wars and Bard’s Tale 3, and also ported countless game titles across all sorts of platforms. She also served on the board of LGBTQ+ advocacy group GLAAD. A gofundme page was set up for her cancer treatment will now go on to fund her funeral. Here are a few of her last words that were posted to social media by her friend Maurine: Valhalla really really reeked of beer, but Jennell seems happy The other angels are tired of me saying “fight for the other users” while throwing my halo around I leave it up to you to go to (LinkedIn) and look up Jennell Jacques, now look at her job description, goddess of technology. and fuck cancer, fuck it in the ass Becky referenced her spouse Jennell Jacquays who passed away in 2024 in her parting words to her friends and followers. Over the past month, she was very transparent about her struggles with the chemotherapy treatment saying “I have no idea how others tolerate it. Fuck cancer.” Fuck cancer indeed. Rebecca Heineman is credited on over 60 games, and you can look at the list over at MobyGames. I remember playing that Mac port of Wolfenstein 3D back in my middle school’s computer lab, and it is likely that she touched many gamers with her multiple decades of game development work. Many members of the video games industry are mourning the loss of Rebecca Heineman today, and we have assembled some of what they had to say. We send our condolences to the family and friends of Rebecca Heineman.
