Emma Clark Library, 120 Main Street, Setauket will present a pop-up concert titled Mary, Queen of Scots: A Life in Music and Verse on Monday, Nov. 24 from 3 p. m. to 4 p. m. Featuring Nicholas Kleinman and Thibault Back de Surany of the chamber ensemble The Van Swietens, this program blends music, historical narrative, and spoken word to illuminate the extraordinary life of Mary Stuart (1542-1587), Queen of Scotland. You will be transported back in time through original music from the 16th and 17th centuries, original poetry written by the Queen herself, and a compelling biographical narrative based on the latest scholarly research. The concert aims to entertain, educate, and deepen public appreciation for this complex and often overlooked historical figure through the immersive power of music and storytelling. Created in February 2022 by their music director and conductor Thibault Back de Surany, The Van Swietens believe the gap between “early” and “new” music isn’t as wide as one might think. Named after Baron Van Swieten, the Dutch ambassador who promoted Baroque music in late 18th century Vienna, they aim to perform lesser-known Baroque, Classical and Early Romantic works on period instruments together with new music commissioned by the ensemble. Based in Salzburg, The Van Swietens come from 14 different countries and believe in dialog between the arts, aiming to create crossover projects.
