Resurfaced video from April 2019 shows Democratic Tennessee congressional candidate Aftyn Behn screaming as security removed her from the office of Republican Gov. Bill Lee during a sit-in protest at the state capitol. The incident occurred when Behn was part of a group demanding that Lee call for the resignation of then-Republican state Rep. David Byrd, who had been accused of sexual misconduct. Behn joined other women from the activist organization Enough is Enough-Tennessee at the capitol on April 17, 2019. The group staged a sit-in and attempted to enter the governor’s office when the doors briefly opened. Security blocked the group from entering, and video shows officers dragging Behn out of the office as she screamed loudly. After being removed, she dropped to her knees in the hallway and continued sobbing on the floor. This Could Be the Most Important Video Gun Owners Watch All Year According to troopers on site, the women were warned that they would be arrested if they did not leave the building. Several members of the group complied and exited. Behn and a smaller number of protesters remained, and they were arrested shortly afterward. One month later, more footage from the 111th General Assembly Meeting showed Behn shouting from the wing of the state house chambers, again calling for Byrd to resign. Security escorted her from the chamber, issued a citation, and released her later that evening. Behn is now running in the special election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District against Republican nominee Matt Van Epps, a former commissioner in the Lee administration. The election is scheduled for December 2 after the resignation of former Republican Rep. Mark Green. In recent weeks, additional past comments from Behn have resurfaced as part of broader scrutiny of her public statements. In footage from 2023, she called Tennessee “racist” and referred to it as a “godforsaken” state. She also appeared on the “Year Old GRITS” podcast in February 2020 and said she hated “everything about Nashville.” These resurfaced recordings and past incidents have circulated widely as Behn campaigns to represent the same voters she criticized in prior statements.
