“Could do things that embarrass you” – Chelsea legend John Terry names ‘incredible’ Manchester United man as greatest ever English PL player

**John Terry Hails Wayne Rooney as Greatest Ever Englishman in Premier League History**

Chelsea legend John Terry has named former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney as the greatest-ever Englishman to play in the Premier League. The former Blues captain, who experienced numerous intense battles during his time at Stamford Bridge, spoke candidly about his toughest opponents in a recent TikTok discussion.

Terry ranked Arsenal icon Thierry Henry as the top striker he ever faced in England’s top flight but reserved special praise for Rooney, ranking him a “very close second.”

> “A very close second would be Wayne Rooney. I think Wayne is the greatest ever England player to play in the Premier League. He doesn’t get enough credit he deserves. The movement, he could drop short, go in behind, score with both feet. He could do things that embarrass you,” Terry said.

Wayne Rooney burst onto the Premier League scene as a 16-year-old with Everton before sealing a big-money move to Manchester United at age 18 in 2004. He became the Red Devils’ all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals and held England’s goal record from 2015 until Harry Kane surpassed it in 2023.

Rooney and Terry played together for England and almost became club teammates at Chelsea, as the Blues were keen to sign the striker during his career. However, Rooney never made the move to Stamford Bridge and has since transitioned into work as a football pundit.

**Frank Lampard’s Retirement Sparked by Surprising Conversation with Luke Shaw**

Chelsea icon Frank Lampard has revealed that his decision to retire from playing football was prompted by an unexpected conversation with Manchester United defender Luke Shaw.

The former midfielder explained in an interview with The Independent that the moment came in 2016, while Shaw was an up-and-coming star at Old Trafford. Lampard recalled discussing Arsenal legend Tony Adams, only to realize that Shaw had no idea who Adams was.

> “I was having a chat with Luke Shaw, and I mentioned Tony Adams. And he didn’t seem to know who I was talking about. I said, ‘Are you winding me up?’ And he said: ‘Who did he play for?’” Lampard recounted.

Recognizing that the new generation of players was unfamiliar with some of the game’s legends, Lampard decided the time had come to hang up his boots.

Lampard enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Chelsea, eventually leaving in 2014 to join MLS outfit New York City FC. He also had a brief stint at Manchester City before moving to the United States, retiring at the end of the 2016 season.
