Baylor AD investigated over alleged sideline confrontation with player about undershirt choice

Baylor University athletic director Mack Rhoades is currently under investigation by the school for his potential involvement in an alleged confrontation with a player, according to multiple reports.

The incident reportedly occurred during Baylor’s game against Arizona State on September 20. Tight end Michael Trigg, a senior, wore a gold, long-sleeved undershirt beneath his jersey, while the rest of the team wore dark-colored undershirts. According to The Athletic, Rhoades became upset over the color of Trigg’s undershirt and allegedly grabbed him by the shirt on the sideline during the first quarter, questioning why he was wearing it and cursing at him in the process.

Following the altercation, Baylor head coach Dave Aranda and tight ends coach Jarrett Anderson confronted Rhoades, who has served as Baylor’s athletic director since 2016. The Athletic reported that this exchange was heated and appeared to have a lingering impact on Trigg throughout the game.

Reportedly, Trigg wore the gold undershirt to cover a shoulder brace. Despite the distraction, he had an outstanding performance, hauling in five receptions for 71 yards and scoring two of Baylor’s three touchdowns. Baylor ultimately lost the game 27-24 on a last-second field goal.

This season, Trigg has recorded 40 receptions for 607 yards and six touchdowns, following a second-team All-Big 12 campaign in 2024. A native of Tampa, Trigg began his college career at USC in 2021 before transferring to Ole Miss for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He found a new home at Baylor for the current season.

Separately, Rhoades recently made his first television appearance as chairperson of the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee on Tuesday. He explained the committee’s rationale behind the first set of playoff rankings this season. As the face of the 11-person committee, Rhoades is responsible for participating in all playoff reveal shows to discuss the rankings, according to Yahoo.
