Holladay, Utah – The newest Trader Joe’s store quietly opened its doors on Halloween, surprising shoppers with a low-key debut unlike the usual fanfare and publicity the grocery chain typically generates. According to the company’s website, the new location at 1895 E. Rodeo Walk Drive officially opened on October 31.
A crew member confirmed on Sunday that there was no opening ceremony, and business on the holiday itself was fairly calm. This contrasts sharply with the grand opening of the new Trader Joe’s in Riverdale just a week earlier. That event drew an estimated 1,200 eager shoppers who lined up outside, accompanied by a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring city officials and a high school marching band.
By Saturday, the Holladay store saw increased activity, and a visit on Sunday morning revealed a bustling atmosphere with dozens of shoppers navigating the aisles.
The Holladay Trader Joe’s is situated within Holladay Hills, a retail and residential development built on the former site of the Cottonwood Mall. The store occupies the lower level of a building that also houses a Kiln coworking space and once served as a Macy’s department store.
For context, Cottonwood Mall was Utah’s first enclosed shopping mall, constructed in 1962 before closing its doors in 2008. Its ongoing redevelopment has sparked debate among residents, notably when Holladay voters rejected an ambitious mixed-use proposal in 2018.
This new location marks the seventh Trader Joe’s store in Utah. Other stores can be found in Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Orem, Riverdale, and two locations in Salt Lake City—one on 400 South and another in Sugar House.
In mid-October, Trader Joe’s and officials in Herriman announced plans for an eighth Utah location, though no official opening date has been announced yet.
