As a dark economic cloud settles over Silicon Valley, yet another giant tech firm has announced thousands of layoffs. Synopsys, a large technology company that supplies services to the semiconductor industry, appears to be planning over 2,000 job cuts, according to a recently filed SEC document reported by SFGate.
The document states:
> “On November 9, 2025, the Board of Directors of Synopsys, Inc. (“Synopsys”) approved a restructuring plan that is expected to result in the termination of approximately 10% of Synopsys’ workforce as of fiscal 2025 year-end (the “Restructuring Plan”).”
SFGate notes that, as of the end of fiscal year 2024, Synopsys had about 20,000 employees. However, the company’s website claims it has 28,000 employees, which puts the estimated layoffs at around 2,000 positions.
These layoffs did not come out of nowhere. Synopsys recently completed its acquisition of Ansys, a move referenced in the SEC filing:
> “This restructuring will allow Synopsys to invest in key growth opportunities and drive business efficiencies following the completion of its acquisition of ANSYS, Inc.”
Layoffs are common following acquisitions and restructurings, so the job cuts are not entirely unexpected. Ansys, which describes itself as the “leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems,” was acquired by Synopsys in a deal originally announced last year and finalized this summer.
The company has indicated that the majority of layoffs are expected to occur during fiscal year 2026, and it aims to mostly complete the restructuring plan by the end of fiscal year 2027, subject to local laws and consultation requirements.
In a statement to Gizmodo, Synopsys said:
> “We are taking a number of targeted steps to improve our efficiency to scale the business, accelerate our strategy and capitalize on the highest-growth opportunities. These initiatives will result in reducing our global workforce over the course of our fiscal year 2026. We do not take these measures lightly and are committed to treating impacted employees with respect and providing support through the transition.”
