Transfer probe to CBI: Zubeen murder accused

**NEW DELHI:**

Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the Northeast India Festival, who was arrested by Assam Police in connection with the death case of 52-year-old Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, has moved the Supreme Court seeking directions for the transfer of the investigation.

Mahanta’s petition requests that the probe be shifted from the state Special Investigation Team (SIT) to either the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA). According to sources from the Supreme Court registry and staff, the plea is scheduled for hearing next week.

A senior official from the top court registry informed *The New Indian Express* (TNIE) that due to the sensitive nature of the case, the hearing has been set after the Supreme Court reopens on Monday, October 6.

In his petition, Mahanta also sought the appointment of a retired Supreme Court judge to monitor and supervise the investigation, ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process.

Besides Mahanta, the SIT has arrested Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta in connection with the case.
