Letter: Maui Humane Society crisis is call to action

The Maui Humane Society is now facing the unthinkable and is preparing to euthanize healthy dogs simply because there is no more room.

As someone who has worked with rescue and mental health in Hawaii, I have seen firsthand how deeply our animals connect to our collective sense of aloha and responsibility. This is not just a Maui crisis; it is a call to conscience for all of us across the islands.

Our shelters, large and small, are overflowing. If we are to live by the values of aloha and compassion that define Hawaii, we must act now. That means adopting if you can, fostering even temporarily, donating supplies, volunteering time, and sharing animals’ stories with friends and neighbors. Every act of care helps prevent a needless loss.

These animals are part of our island family—they depend on us. Let’s not fail them when they need us most.
